60 Million USD for Integrated Ecosystem Management Project

Among the first duties of the new Country Director of the World Bank, Colin Bruce, was to pledge 60 Million USD to the Western Kenya Integrated Ecosystem Management Project (WKIEM).  WKIEM is already slated to receive 4.1 Million USD in funding from The Global Environment Facility (GEF), while the Government of Kenya plans to chip in a further 120 Million KSh (1.5Million USD).

The mega land rehabilitation project, which will be implemented by the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) and The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), utilizes a community driven approach to ecosystem management, involving 8 000 to 12 000 representative households in 180 focal areas.

The World Bank press release listed the benefits of the project as including “…reduced land degradation, reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) accumulation in the atmosphere, improved farm biodiversity, and decreased erosion in watersheds that feed into the Nyando, Yala and Nzoia river basins.”
